Surprising Artifact Discovered by Archeologists in Veliki Novgorod Sepulchre

In the course of diggings at the Yaroslavov site in the historical centre of Veliki Novgorod archeologists have found a massive amber cross, to the experts sheer surprise.

The cross was found in the pit at Nikolo-Dvorishenski Cathedral, built in the period from 1113 to 1136, according to chronicles.

Nearby the church the archeologists unearthed a brick sepulcher with an arched floor, where a man over 45 years of age had been buried in a wooden coffin. The tomb can be tentatively dated to the 16th century. However, finding of a massive amber cross in the sepulcher came as an utter surprise.

Suchlike crosses in Veliki Novgorod were traditionally dated to the 14th-15th centuries, and we did not know similar crosses of the 16th century - the head of research works Denis Pezhemski explained.

We were amazed to find under the cross a well-preserved collar of a linen or woolen shirt, decorated with silver or golden embroidery of stunning beauty. After restoration this collar will adorn the collection of the Novgorod Museum Preserve; we have little of such textile of the 16th century in Russia - the archeologist added.
