Are Low Radiation Doses Harmful?

Radiation is known to have negative effect on human health, since it causes mutations in DNA of living organisms, which in its turn may lead to tumors or hereditary diseases.

Heavy doses of radiation are undoubtedly harmful, but some say that low doses have minor effect on human health. Recent studies revealed that radiation caused mutations due to so-called radiation-induced genome instability. This phenomenon was detected in progeny of irradiated cells long after the irradiation, but its mechanisms remain a mystery.

Russian scientists studied effects of low radiation doses on mice, as well as developed a technique for making biological systems more resistant to radiation. Researchers showed that said doses caused increase in cells with mutations, compared to background numbers. Injections of Selecsen antioxidant make said phenomenon less intensive.
