The well-known Russian film director Mikheil Kalatozishvili has died today, aged 50, in Moscow. The death was caused by a heart attack, his family explains.
Mikheil Kalatozishvili, the grandson of the renowned Soviet film director Mikhail Kalatozov, gained international fame due to Wild Field, which became his last work. The film released in 2008 was awarded the Golden Eagle, the White Elephant and the Grand Prize of the Marrakesh Film Festival. The director’s early works The Beloved (1991) and Mysteries (2000) also took various prizes.
Mikheil Kalatozishvili was born in 1959 in Tbilisi. He was the graduate of the Film Directors’ Faculty of VGIK (All-Russian Film Institute). Initially he worked at Georgia Film Studio, and then became a production director at Lenfilm.
