Unusual Bears Dwell at Southern Kuril Islands

Japanese scientists in collaboration with Russian ecologists organize a joint expedition to the Kunashir Island of Southern Kuril Islands in order to study unusual brown bears, which have silver-coloured fur. These bears were never studied before, but they are quite abundant on the Kunashir Island. The animals are not albinos, since albinos are known to have red eyes, and these bears have normal eye colour. Scientists say that silver bears are often dwellers of the islands and are rarely seen on the continent. The reason is so-called “island effect” or brother-and-sister mating. Researchers will leave the Kunashir Island on October 28, 2009. Before that they plan to filan to discuss future expeditions. Source: Science & Technologies
