Russian Hippies Ask Authorities to Leave Tsoi’s Wall in Peace

The authorities of Moscow have decided to transform the cult place of a meeting of Russian hippies – the Wall of Viktor Tsoi in Arbat Street.

They want to “refine” the wall: cover it with marble and put a piece of it into a frame. However, experts, even those who are not fans of Viktor Tsoi’s songs, believe that such “cultivation” will kill this genuinely cult place. The Wall is, by the way, one of the musts in the tourist walking route and, unlike other monuments, always has fresh flowers by it.

Right after the death of the singer and songwriter Viktor Tsoi in a car accident on August 15, 1990, his admirers covered a wall of a modest house at the intersection of Arbat Street and Krivoarbatski Lane with quotations from his songs and outspoken inscriptions, such as “Tsoi is alive”, “Vitya, we love you!”, etc. For a few years initially admirers of the Kino band and Viktor Tsoi even kept day and night watch by the wall to protect it from being painted over by yard cleaners or chavs.
