Construction of new buildings in the historical centre of Petersburg must be prohibited, the famous film-director Alexander Sokurov claimed at a sitting of the All-Russian Society for Protection of Culture Monuments on Wednesday.
“I know that even my associates do not support this idea, but building in a historical centre by itself is a crime. We must protect it, and what has already been built and marred the city’s face, is to be demolished” - Mr. Sokurov states.
"I live in the space of these buildings and I cannot abstract my mind from them! They do nut merely mar the look, but they destroy harmony” - the film-director explained.
Speaking about the much-spoken-of construction of the Okhta Centre, which he believes to be “a particularly political” venture that federal authorities must resolve, the director pointed out generally low architectural level in the country.
