While International UN conference on climate change will soon start working in Copenhagen, Russian scientists decided to discuss the issues of greenhouse gases in Moscow.
The aim of the Copenhagen conference is to elaborate new international agreements on cutting greenhouse gas emissions to replace Kyoto protocol, which expires in 2012.
European Union tries to become a leader in the fight against greenhouse gases, being one of most active advocates of stiff international regulations of emission cuts.
However, quite a weak scientific basis for new climatic rules exists. Direct dependence of Earth temperature growth on increasing concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere doesn’t have enough scientific evidence.
Scientists still do not have a single opinion on whether there is global warming or changes take place within a long climatic cycle. Well, supporters of the global warming theory ignore other possible explanations of the effect, generating suspicions that climate change is used to cover other problems. All this results in a new phobia – fear of hydrocarbons, especially methane as a carrier of ecological threat.
Ecological properties of gas require further studies, since some scientists think that gas is much friendlier to our environment than oil or coal.
Russian scientists have discussed the problem of carbon dioxide emissions, ecological properties of methane, and environmentally friendly fuels. The results of the discussion will soon be made public.
