Front Veteran Writer Grigory Baklanov Passes Away

The well-known Russian writer Grigory Yakovlevich Baklanov has died, aged 86, in Moscow.
      He was born on 11 September 1923 in Voronezh, left to the frontline as a volunteer, was badly wounded, and finished his military service in Vienne.
      Grigory Baklanov started to be published from 1950 and became widely known thanks to his first stories on war based on his own frontline experience: Nine Days, An Inch of Land, and others. Among the writers books there are Friends and Forever 19, for which he was awarded the USSR State Prize in 1982.
      He wrote scripts for 8 films, including the famous It Was in May. From 1986 to 1993 Grigory Baklanov was the editor-in-chief of the literary journal Znamya, where lots of the earlier banned works were published during that period.
