Laser Fights Renal Calculi
Kidney stone

Medics of Novosibirsk use laser for crushing kidney stones without any invasion.

Renal surgery is a very delicate thing – some time ago, patients with urinary stone disease had large incisions from surgery, and it took months for their kidneys to recover. Today surgeons have video-endoscopic units, which make urogenital surgery almost non-traumatic and without incisions. The same is true for kidneys – renal stones are removed by means of lithotripsy (crushing calculi by ultrasound).

Medics from Novosibirsk use laser unit for this purpose – one laser can work with renal cell carcinoma and seal blood vessels simultaneously, and another crushes stones in kidneys and urinal bladder with making incisions.

Surgeons note that laser has pulses of given length and intensity, thus “melting” a calculus and not burning soft tissues. This laser unit can be useful for removing tumors, while leaving organs at their places.
