Well-known Soviet stage and film actor


Aleksandr Sergeievich Demyanenko was born on May 30, 1937 in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg).

Upon graduation from the GITIS Academy (State Russian Theatre Art Academy) he took the stage of the Mayakovsky Theatre for a few months, and then moved to Leningrad (now St.Petersburg), where he spent all his life.  His theatrical career was not too successful: he played few bright roles on stage, being more engaged in private theatrical enterprises. 

His debut as a film actor in the movie Wind in 1958 attracted viewers’ attention to him. The movie Peace to the Entering One released in 1961 and featuring Alexander Demyanenko, got several awards at the Venice International Film Festival. The actor gained all-Union fame thanks to his roles in the movies Dima Gorin’s Career and Adult Children. After that Demyanenko left the theater and completely dedicated himself to cinema. 
The reputation of a comedy actor clang to him after starring as Shurik in the popular comedy movies Operation Y and Other Shurik's Adventures, Kidnapping: Caucasian Style and Ivan Vasilyevich: Back to the Future. These movies became part of the gold fund of Russian cinema. The image fixed to him resulted in the fact that Demyanenko came to be hardly invited to filming. The he carved out a niche for himself in television. He played solo performances, voiced animated films and foreign movies. In 1991 Alexander Demyanenko was entitled the People’s Artiste of RSFSR. 
Aleksandr Sergeievich Demyanenko died of a heart failure on August 22, 1999 in St. Petersburg and was laid to rest at the Seraphimsky Cemetery.
