Soviet artist and caricaturist

      

Viktor Nikolaevich Deni (his real surname was Denisov) was born into the family of the impoverished nobleman Nikolay Nikolaevich Denisov in Moscow on March 8, 1893.

In the 1900s he was a student of N. P. Ulyanov. Starting from 1906 he took part in exhibitions of the Independent’s Association and Humorists’ Salon. In the 1910s he worked in a number of comic magazines. In 1913 Viktor Deni was invited to the Satyricon magazine together with the skilled draftsmen Yu. P. Annenkov and V. N. Masyutin.

From 1919 he lived in Kazan and contributed to a few Soviet political editions and a satirical magazine. From 1921 he was in the editorial staff of The Pravda newspaper.

Viktor Deni is known as one of the founders of the Soviet political poster art.

In 1932 he was entitled the Honored Artist of RSFSR.

He died on August 3, 1946.

Works by Viktor Deni are kept in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.
