 Vladimir Domogatsky

Russian Soviet sculptor. The teacher, professor of Moscow State Art Institute (from 1937). Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1937).

      

Vladimir Domogatsky was born into the family of a Ukrainian doctor, who was a landowner. He spent his childhood in Switzerland and in Ukraine. Then he moved to Moscow. From 1897 to 1902 Vladimir studied the law at the Moscow University.

He took private sculpture lessons from S. M. Volnukhin and later studied painting under S. V. Ivanov.
 
At the beginning of the 20th century the artist repeatedly visited Paris and Italy, where he studied the European art. The art of sculptors P. P. Trubetskoy, and Auguste Rodin had a special impact on his creativity. In 1907 Vladimir Domogatsky actively studied marble work techniques in Paris.
 
After returning to Russia he taught in the Stroganov Art School in Moscow from 1908 to 1910. From 1937 he was a professor at the Moscow Fine Arts Institute and the dean of the sculpture faculty. Among his students there were L. E. Kerbel, V. E. Tsigal, and D.Yu. Mitlyansky.
 
He became a member of the Moscow Association of Artists in 1914. Vladimir Domogatsky also participated in the Itinerants’ exhibitions.
 
The artist was laid to rest at the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow.
