 Nikolay Suyetin

Painter, graphic artist, porcelain artist, poster artist, and designer.


Nikolay Mikhaylovich Suyetin was born at the Myatlevsky Station of Kaluga Province in 1897.

He studied in Vitebsk Art School from 1918. After arrival of Kazimir Malevich in Vitebsk Nikolay Suyetin became a true apostle of the Messiah of new art and started working in the suprematist manner. Nikolay Suyetin followed the precepts of his teacher and the principles of Suprematism throughout his entire creative life.

In 1922 the beginning artist followed Kazimir Malevich to Petrograd, where they worked in the Museum of Art Culture, the State Institute of Art Culture and the Decorative Institute. He worked in the field of technical, industrial and architectural design and was the main artist of Soviet exhibitions in Paris (1937) and New York (1939).

One of the main spheres of Nikolay Suyetin's creativity was his work at the Leningrad Lomonosov Porcelain Plant, where he worked from 1922, and was the art director of the plant from 1932 to 1952.

In his design of new porcelain forms Nikolay Suyetin used motives of suprematist compositions and thus made a real revolution in applied arts and crafts.
