Modern Russian film director and screenwriter

      

The son of the famous film director Pyotr Todorovsky, Valery easily entered the cinema world and attracted public’s attention with undoubted success. The first three films directed by Valery Todorovsky, namely The Catafalque, Love and Evenings near Moscow won prizes in the Cannes, Mannheim, Chicago and Moscow. His Country of the Deaf was justly recognized the best picture of the year. He is known as one of the most gifted film directors of new Russian cinema. Moreover, now it is him who chooses what the RTR TV channel will telecast.
Valery Petrovich Todorovsky was born in Odessa on May 9, 1962. In 1984 he graduated from the All-Union State Cinematography Institute. He started his creative career in cinema as a screenwriter and made his debut with scenario to the movie The Double co-written with A. Kolbergs in 1986. Valery Todorovsky wrote scripts for the famous films The Person of Suite (1987), Gambrinus (1990), and Over Dark Water (1993).
Valery Todorovsky debuted as a film director with the film Love based on his own scenario in 1991. This work attracted attention at numerous film festivals. The year 1998 saw the release of Valery Todorovsky’s unusual film Country of the Deaf starring Chulpan Khamatova and Dina Korzun in the leads.
Presently Valery Todorovsky is a board member of the Gorky Film Studio.
