Soviet aircraft designer and inventor


Andrey Nikolaevich Tupolev (1888 - 1972) was an outstanding Russian and Soviet aircraft designer, a member of the Acadey of Science of the USSR, and a triple Hero of Socialist Labor. He designed and headed construction of over a hundred types of both civil, and military aircrafts. The aircrafts created by Andrey Tupolev set more than a hundred world records and made a number of unique flights.

Andrey Tupolev finished the Imperial Technical School with honors and then graduated from the Moscow Technical Institute. In 1918 he promoted and assisted foundation of the Central Aerodynamic Institute, the first research institute on aerodynamics in the USSR.

Andrey Tupolev was the first one in the USSR to design an all-metal airplane. Several of his military projects were widely used during World War II. Later a number of jet planes were developed by him for military and commercial purposes.

His son, Alexey Andreevich Tupolev (1925–2001), also became an aircraft designer. He created a big jet plane, the first supersonic long-range strategic bomber.
