 Alexander Chubaryan


Born:   October 14, 1931

Outstanding historian, researcher, academician and public figure.

      

The research supervisor of the Institute of General History, the president of the State Academic University of the Humanities, the doctor of historical sciences and the academician of RAS Alexander Chubaryan has turned 85.  The scientist is actively engaged in his long-term research and forecasts concertning development of Russia-and-Europe relations.

Alexander Chubaryan is the founder of a new direction in domestic historiography, namely the study of European ideas and European history. The academician has authored more than 350 scientific treatises, including a number of monographs. His recently published book is titled Russian Europeanism. Presently the professor is writing a new book about Europe, which will be titled Future Relations of Russia and Europe in the Context of the Past and the Present.

Alexander Chubaryan was born in Moscow on October 14, 1931. His father was a well-known library curator and his mother worked as a department manager of the Central Scientific Agricultural Library of the All-Union Lenin Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
In 1955 Alexander Chubaryan graduated from the History Faculty of the Lomonosov Moscow State University. In 1959 he defended the master's thesis under the title "Brest Peace and Position of the Entente Countries. In 1970 he defended the doctoral dissertation on the subject "Vladimir Lenin and Shaping of the Soviet Foreign Policy (1917 - 1922)".
From 1958 to 1988 Alexander Chubaryan made his way from a junior researcher to the head of international relations history department at the History Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1988 he became its director and held this post until turning the research supervisor of the institute in 2015.
Since 2007 Alexander Chubaryan has been a member of the Committee on Religious Associations at the Government of the Russian Federation, and a member of the Russian Council on International Affairs. He was the chairman of the advisory council of the RF Highest Certifying Committee on History (1999 - 2007), a member of the Presidential Council on Science, Technologies and Education (2001 - 2012), and the Committee for Counteracting the Attempts of History Falsification (2009 - 2012).
Besides, Alexander Chubaryan is the chairman of the National Committee of Russian Historians, the All-Russian public organization "Association of Teachers of History and Social Science", and the International Association of Institutes for History of the CIS countries. He is the cochairman of the Russian History Association and a member of the Boards of Trustees of the Russian Scientific Foundation and the  History of Fatherland Foundation.
Alexander Chubaryan has a number of state awards, including The Order of Honour (1976), and For Merits to the Fatherland of the 3rd and 4th degrees (2011 and 2006).
