Boris Eifman was born in Rubtsovsk town of the Altai Territory on July 22, 1946.
Boris Eifman was born into the family of the doctor Klara Kuris and the engineer Yankel Eifman mobilized from Bessarabia to the Altai Territory before the war for building a tank factory.
In 1951 Boris returned to Kishinev. In 1964 he graduated from the Choreographic Department of the Kishinev Music College. From 1962 to 1966 he was the head of a children's choreographic studio at the local Pioneers’ Palace. In 1972 Boris Eifman graduated from the Choreographic Department of the Leningrad Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory.
The aspiring choreographer debuted with ballets on the stage of the Maly Opera and Ballet Theatre in Leningrad in 1970.
From 1971 to 1977 Boris Eifman was the ballet master in the Leningrad Vaganova Choreographic School and staged ballets in the Kirov Opera and Ballet Theater.
Boris Eifman gained wide popularity with the success of his version of the classical Firebird, which also toured in Moscow and Japan. In those years he became the author of film ballets Variations on Rococo, Icarus, Three Compositions, Bloody Sun and Brilliant Divertissement.
In 1977 Boris Eifman founded his innovative theater, which was first named The New Ballet and was later renamed into the St. Petersburg State Academic Ballet Theater under the leadership of Boris Eifman. Now it is well known as Boris Eifman Theatre.
Already in the late 1970s the choreographer staged performances with his new troupe. Staging ballets with the combination of academic and no-toeshoe choreography to the accompaniment of modern progressive rock music was a groundbreaking innovation.
Till date it remains Russia’s only modern ballet theater striking with its grandiose ensemble configurations and constructs. While creating his style Boris Eifman worked through a wide range of choreographic systems, the theater being a peculiar laboratory for him. The performers in his ballet troupe are perfectly skilled in the classical dance and have the transformation mastery.
Boris Eifman, the founder of a new dance school, defines the art of ballet as a spiritual process first of all. Already in the late 1980s theatrical critics unanimously noted that Boris Eifman's choreography is the most innovative, original and creative phenomenon, whereas his philosophical and psychological ballet parables are the 21st century choreography.
Professor Boris Eifman is the art director and director of the St. Petersburg State Academic Ballet Theater. He is the Honored Artist of the RSFSR and the People's Artist of Russia.
