Alexander Gorodnitsky is a singing poet, a geologist, a doctor of science, and a traveler, who has visited the most exotic places, including Antarctica, the North Pole and the ocean floor. The songs and poems by Gorodnitsky are always sincere and frank: free of a single false note, and revealing high professionalism, deep insight into life and history, along with exquisite poetic gift.
Alexander Gorodnitsky was born on March 20, 1933 in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) into the family of office workers. In 1951 he finished with excellence secondary school and entered the Plekhanov Leningrad Institute of Mines, which he graduated in 1957 majoring in geophysics.
Alexander started writing poetry when a schoolboy yet, whereas his first poetic publications date as far back as 1948. Gorodnitsky’s first songs appeared during his expedition in 1953. For a long time his songs were distributed in samizdat tape records, and often performed by other singers. Unlike other bards, for several decades Gorodnitsky composed and sang his songs a capella; it is just recently that he has started playing the guitar. At the numerous concerts he practically always performs with a guitarist accompanying him. He tours in many cities of Russia, participates in festivals of author’s song and publishes books of his poetry.
As a scientist Alexander Gorodnitsky has published over 260 research works, including 8 monographs on geology and geophysics of the ocean floor.
