 Aleksei Ivanov

Born:   November, 23rd 1969

Aleksei Viktorovich Ivanov was born in 1969 in the city of Gorki (the Soviet-era name of Nizhni Novgorod) into the family of engineers-ship builders. In 1971 the family moved to Perm. In 1987 after finishing school Aleksei entered the Journalism Faculty of the Ural State University, which he quit next year. In 1990 he again entered the same university, this time the Faculty of Art Criticism and Cultural Science, which he successfully graduated as an art critic.

His debut publication was a fantastic story Big Dipper Hunting issued in the magazine Ural Pathfinder (Sverdlovsk) in 1990. Having returned to Perm, Aleksei Ivanov changed lots of professions: he worked as a watchman, a school teacher, a journalist, a teacher at university, as well as a guide in a travel agency – the job that led him to his hobby of studying the local lore of the Perm Territory.

He returned to writing and became known thanks to his novel The Heart of Parma on the history of the Perm Territory of the 15th century. While working on it, the writer organized children's art museum of local lore.

His alternative interpretation of those misty past days is full of the supernatural, mystical and wondrous. The novel is set in the frontier of the pagan realm and Orthodox Russia, where there coexist both wooden cut Christ and Gold Woman with an Old-Testament face, and where churches and heathen temples stand abreast, where ideologies and gods clash.
