Aircraft designer, creator of record-breaking planes

The 11th son of a poor Vologda peasant, Sergey Ilyushin became the designer of legendary aircrafts of the 20th century.

Sergey Ilyushin was General designer of aviation technology, a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, the colonel general of Engineering Corps, and triple Hero of Socialist Labor.

The 11th son of a poor Vologda peasant, Sergey Ilyushin started hard labor very early in life. In 1910 he was employed as an unskilled airfield worker and that was his first acquaintance with aviation. He taught himself to mathematics, physics, and chemistry, which helped him to become an aviation mechanic, and then a flight mechanic after his conscription. Still Sergey Ilyushin dreamed of flying. Therefore in 1917 he got qualified as a pilot. The Civil War broke out soon and joined the army at the front line. He was in charge of workshops of an aviation group. After the war Sergey Ilyushin was referred to study at the Moscow Institute for Engineers of Red Aircraft Fleet. During his successful studies Sergey Ilyushin also contrived to construct training gliders. In 1926 he graduated from the institute. In 1931 Sergey Ilyushin founded and headed an aviation design office.

Whatever the general colonel engineer Sergey Ilyushin undertook - be it a strike-fighter or a bomber, a passenger liner or an airlifter - every time it turned out a unique aircraft.

In regards of the number of large-series and famous planes created by Ilyushin's Design Office  he was far ahead of all his colleagues but for Tupolev.

The most large-series warplane in the history of aviation is the heavy attack aircraft Il-2, with 36 183 copies of it produced.
