Yevgeny Kafelnikov was born on the 18th of February in the city of Sochi. In the hometown his competitive career began. A player-to-be was five years old when Yevgenys father put him under the supervision of the tennis coach Peschanko V. After the boy had demonstrated outstanding individual capacity for tennis it was decided to take Yevgeny to the Shishkin V. coach. In 1981 after 12 years being trained by Shishkin Kafelnikov was included in USSR team. The first significant success was in doubles when he became the Champion of Europe twice (14-16 years old) playing with Medvedev Andrey. In 1989-90 he became the master Sunshine Cup playing in USSR team. In spring of 1991 he was in NB academy for probation period where he played several sets with Pete Sampras at the first time.
From 1991 to 1998 his coach was Lepyoshin Anatoly. Originally he didn’t consider Yevgeny an outstanding player, but than it was exactly Lepyoshin who helped Kafelnikov to succeed. The progress of a young player was really marvelous. Yevgeny Kafelnikov became the first Russian won the Roland Garros Grand Slam tournament at a time in single and doubles.
In 1999 the next Yevgenys coach became Stefanki Larry. Training under the guidance of this outstanding coach Kafelnikov won one more Grand Slam tournament in Australian Open 1999. He kept winning in different tournaments and became an Olympic medalist in Sydney 2000.
2002 Yevgeny Kafelnikov achieved his dream, he gained the Davis Cup. After that he planned to leave tennis but kept playing in 2003.
Besides tennis this outstanding person is fond of fishing and golf and can pilot a plain.
