Russian artist, one of the best genre painters, a typical representative of the art of peredvizhniki.
Alexei Ivanovich Korzukhin was born in Yekaterinburg on March 23, 1835.
He studied in the Academy of Arts; he received a small gold medal for his paining Drunk Father of the Family. In 1863, together with his several companions, who refused to paint on a given subject for a competitive theme, left the academy and participated in foundation of the Petersburg Artel of Artists; he remained its active member till its breakup.
His painting Funeral Repast at Village Cemetery gained him the rank of a 1st degree artist, and his Return of Housefather from the Fair won him the rank of an academician.
In his works Korzukhin with his deep knowledge of folk life conveyed characteristic types of Russian common people, merchants, handicraftsmen and the middle class. He also painted portraits and religious images.
Alexei Korzukhin died in St. Petersburg on October 30, 1894.
