Andron Konchalovsky was born on August 20, 1937 into the family of the writer Sergey Mikhalkov and the poetess and translator Natalya Konchalovskaya.
In 1952 he finished the Central Music School. It was followed with Music College at the Moscow Conservatory. In 1957-1959 he studied in the Moscow State Conservatory, majoring in the piano.
In 1965 he graduated from the Directors’ Faculty of the VGIK (the All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography), where he studied under Mikhail Romm. He debuted with the film First Teacher based on Chingiz Aitmatov’s story. The lead character of a girl was played by the young ballerina Natalia Arinbasarova, who later became his wife.
In 1972 after the all-Union success of the film End of the Ataman written by him Andron Konchalovsky was conferred the State Award of Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. The film had 30 million audience in 1972.
In 1980 he became the People’s Actor of RSFSR.
The same year he moved to Hollywood, where he directed a few movies, but was disappointed in American cinema and returned home in the early 1990s.
In 2002 Andron Konchalovsky became a member of the National Academy of Film Arts and Sciences. He became an officer of the Arts and Literature Order of France in 2005.
In 2005 he founded Andrey Konchalovsky Production Center, which created programs for leading channels of the Russian television, produced theatrical performances, and carried out publishing projects.
He has been a member of the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation since 2010.
In 2010 he received the Legion of Honour in France that he was awarded in 2009.
In his numerous interviews and reports on television Andrey Konchalovsky professes actual lack of democracy in Russia.
Presently he lives with his family both in Russia and abroad (in Italy), depending on where he works.
