Dmitry Khvorostovsky is one of the best contemporary Russian baritones, his beautiful timbre coupled with an outstanding bel canto technique.
Dmitry Khvorostovsky was born into the family of a chemical engineer in the city of Krasnoyarsk on October 16, 1962.
His father, Alexander Khvorostovsky made a collection of records of world opera stars, was fond of singing and playing the piano himself. Dmitry started singing at the age of 4. Since early childhood he admired the Italian baritones Ettore Bastianini and Tito Gobbi, the Russian bass Fyodor Shalyapin, and the Greek soprano Maria Callas.
Dmitry Khvorostovsky graduated from the Krasnoyarsk Arts Institute. From 1985 to 1990 he was the soloist of the Krasnoyarsk State Opera and Ballet Theatre.
In 1987 Dmitry Khvorostovsky became the winner of the first award of the M. I. Glinka All-Russian vocal competition. It was followed with the Grand Prix at the vocal competition in Toulouse, France in 1988.
The singer gained world-wide acclaim with his victory at the BBC television competition Singer of the World in the city of Cardiff (Great Britain) where he took the first prize and The Best Voice title in 1989.
After his opera debut in the West (Pyotr Tchaikovsky's opera The Queen of Spades in Nice) Dmitry came to be invited to perform at the best world opera theaters and participate in prestigious opera festivals, such as the Royal Theater in Covent Gardena (London, Great Britain), Metropolitan Opera (New York, the USA), the Lyric Opera of Chicago (the USA), the Parisian Opera (France), the Bavarian State Opera (Munich, Germany), La Scala (Milan, Italy), the Vienna State Opera (Austria), and the Salzburg Festival (Austria).
Dmitry Khvorostovsky sings to the accompaniment by the famous orchestras: New York Philharmonic Orchestra, San Francisco Symphonic Orchestra and Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.
The year 2011 saw the release the television film Music Odyssey in St. Petersburg by the opera director Brian Large. It stars Dmitry Khvorostovsky and Fleming: the singers roam across St. Petersburg, performing Russian composers’ opera duets and arias in the Peterhoff Palace, the Hermitage Museum, and the Winter Palace.
The singer holds numerous awards of Russia and other states. In 1991 he got the State Award of RSFSR. In 1995 Dmitry Khvorostovsky was awarded the title of the People's Artist of Russia.
Dmitry Khvorostovsky is married to the Italian singer and actress Florans Illi-Khvorostovskaya and has 4 children.
On June 24, 2015 the official website of Dmitry Khvorostovsky announced cancellation of the singer’s performances till the end of summer. He was diagnosed with brain tumour and will undergo medical treatment at the Royal Marsden oncology clinic in London.
