Well-known artist, son of the artist Petr Miturich


Mai Petrovich Miturich-Khlebnikov was born on May 29, 1925 into the family of artists Vera Khlebnikova and Petr Miturich in Moscow. In November, 1942 he left for war against the Nazi and reached Berlin. Mai worked in a frontline team of artists with such masters as Anatoli Nikich, Boris Popov, and Evgenii Rachev.

In 1948 he entered a correspondence department of the Moscow Printing Institute and graduated it in 1953. For many years onwards he taught in this institute. Satisfying a request of his father, Mai Miturich found an ubandoned grave of Velimir Khlebnikov near Novgorod and transported remains of the poet to Moscow. The artist got State Award of the Russian Federation of 1993 for wall painting of the Y. A. Orlov Paleontology Museum of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

He gained a silver medal of the USSR Academy of Arts for the same work in 1987. Mai Mituritch won a silver medal and a diploma of the International Exhibition of Book Art in Leipzig in 1965 for illustrations to Samuil Marshak’s book Poems for Children. He was also awared with a silver medal and the diploma of the International Biennial of Illustrations for Childrens Books in Bratislava in 1967 for his illustrations to Korney Chukovsky’s book The Stolen Sun. The artist also gained the Order the Rising Sun (Japan) in 2005. He is the winner of the award Person of the Book of 2004.

Mai Miturich-Khlebnikov is the author of numerous water colors and illustrations to books. The artist died on June 30, 2008 and was laid down to rest in Moscow.
