 Arkady Rylov


Born:   29 January [O.S. 17 January] 1870
Deceased:   June 22, 1939

Russian Soviet landscape painter, graphic artist and teacher.

      

Arkady Aleksandrovich Rylov grew up in the family of his stepfather, who was a notary, whereas his father was mentally sick.

Arkady studied in St. Petersburg, first in the Baron Stieglitz’ Central School for Technical Drawing (1888 — 1891) and took classes from Konstantin Kryzhizky. Then in 1894 — 1897 he studied in the Academy of Arts under Arkhip Kuindzhi. Arkady Rylov participated in founding The Union of Russian Artists and the World of Art group. He was titled Academician of Painting in 1915.
 
Arkady Rylov created dozens of paintings and sketches in the color palette typical for him in the outskirts of St. Petersburg and in Finland. Besides, he was a prolific and successfully illustrator and wrote essays about nature.
Arkady Rylov was chairman of A. I. Kuindzhi Society of Artists.
 
He conducted animalist drawing classes at the Drawing School of the Society for Encouragement of Arts from 1902 and taught in the Academy of Arts from 1917 (professor from 1918). Besides, he contributed for the Chizh journal.
