Pyotr Ufimtsev is a Russian physicist, whose work in the field of electromagnetic wave difraction is applied in engineering aircrafts and other military equipment of the Stealth technology.
Pyotr Ufimtsev was born into a peasant family in the village of Ust-Charyshskaya Pristan of the Altai Territory in 1931.
In 1954 he graduated from the Odessa State University majoring in physics theory and worked in the Central Research Radiotechnical Institute till 1973. His activity was fruitful: as a matter of fact he laid the foundation of the diffraction theory. However, he was not a well-known scientist in the USSR. Despate that the USA experts discerned that theoretical developments by Pyotr Ufimtsev can be applied for military purposes.
The year 1962 saw the publication of his book Method of Edge Waves in the Physical Theory of Diffraction. That was the very modest start on the way to engineering "invisible aircrafts".
Pyotr Ufimtsev worked in the State Institute of Radio-Engineering Electronics of the USSR Academy of Science from 1973 to 1990 and in the California University, the USA, from 1990.
The inventor holds the Grumman Medal of Honour for his contribution into research and development.
