Vyacheslav Zaitsev, more commonly known as Slava Zaitsev, is a Russian fashion designer, who is rightly called "Red Dior" by the Western press.
The childhood of the future designer passed during the years of war and in the conditions typical for that time. Vyacheslav`s father went to war and his mother had to grow the son alone. Maria Ivanovna dreamed about the stage, being a really gifted woman. She failed to bring her fantasies to life, so she instilled the interest for the beauty of nature and the world around them, and for reading to her son Vyacheslav.
In 1945 Slava Zaitsev went to Ivanovo secondary school, and in 1952 he continued his studies in Chemical Engineering College. In 1956 he received a diploma as an "Artist of textile pattern". Zaitsev decided to develop his skills and boost his knowledge in Moscow Textile Institute. There Vyacheslav already acted as a designer and a demonstrator of his own clothes at the same time. Russian folk art took a close attention of the designer. He went to ancient Russian cities and learned the essence of art: proportions, combinations of colors, rhythm, coarse humanity and cheerful color palette system.
In 1965 Mark Boan and Pierre Cardin spotted Vyacheslav Zaitsev in some article. But before this meeting the designer showed himself well enough, so he was invited for the post of the artistic director of the experimental and technical workshop of the All-Union fashion house in Moscow. Paris couturiers got acquainted with the works of the Russian colleague and called him a professional. Zaitsev worked for 13 years in Moscow fashion house and finished his career there as an assistant of the art director. At the same time Vyacheslav Zaitsev worked on his own clothes fashion. In the years 1965-1968 the famous "Russian series" was shown to the public, in 1976 the collection of Ivanovo cotton prints as well as the combined collections were shown in the USA, Japan, Canada, France, Yugoslavia and Italy. The Western press called Zaitsev "Red Dior". In 1974, according to the Czech edition of "Kveta" in the "Fashion review for 100 years", Zaitsev took a decent place in the gallery of portraits of prominent fashion designers. His name ranged with Paul Poiret, Gabrielle Chanel, Frederick Worth and Christian Dior. In 1970 the artist began to work with popular performing artists and theater actors.
In 1996 Slava Zaitsev became the president of "Moscow Zaitsev Fashion House" JSC. Under his leadership Fashion Lab (the organization for promising fashion designers) as well as the Model Agency started to function. Now Slava Zaitsev manages his Fashion House and designs the clothes for politicians, Russian artists and athletes. In the summer of 2007 he hosted the program "Fashion verdict" on the First TV Channel where he worked until mid-2009.
Vyacheslav Zaitsev was married to Marina Zaitseva (their marriage ended in divorce). He has a son Yegor who is a designer too, and two granddaughters: Marusya and Nastya.
