Situated 90 km away from Arkhangelsk, this old village was once an administrative and trade center of the region. However, no less significance is attributed to another fact: some 4 km from Kholmogory there is a village where M.V. Lomonosov (1711-1765) was born. Nowadays one can visit M.V. Lomonosov Historical-Memorial Museum devoted to life and work of this prominent Russian scientist and writer, who founded the Moscow State University.
