    Olonets

Olonets is one of the oldest towns of the Russia North. It is the administrative center of the Olonets District of the Republic of Karelia

The town stands on the Olonets plain, at the confluence of River Megrega into Olonka.

Olonets has the population of 8402 people (as of 2014).

Sightseeing

• N. G. Prilukin Olonets National Museum of Livvi-Karelians;

• Cathedral of Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God (1828);

• Assumption Church in Kunilitsa Village;

• Wooden roadside cross of the early 19th century in Tatchelitsa Village;

• Ancient wooden chapels in the villages of Novinka, Pertiselga, Utozero, and Gavrilovka;

• Ethnographic open-air museum on the place of Olonets Fortress exhibits constructions and household items of the Livvi-Karelians;

Olonets Games of Father Frosts have been held in Olonets annually since 1999.
