The Astrakhan Region is located in the south -eastern part of Russia in the natural and economic zone of the Volga Region. The region"s territory stretches from the north -west to the south -east in form of a narrow strip along the low stream of the Volga River and its branches Akhtuba and Buzan for over 400km. The territory is divided into 11 districts, with 6 cities, 11 towns and 146 rural administrations. The capital of the region is Astrakhan (490 000 people) 1534km away from Moscow. It is mostly located min the Precaspian lowlands, and partially, 27m below the sea level.

The climate is generally continental, droughty. The average temperature in July is +25 C, in January 6 C. Precipitation is 200mm per year. The territory of the region is generally meadow, wormwood and semi-desert.

Through Astrakhan Region Russia has access to the Caspian Sea, borders on the States of CIS and on Islam Republic of Iran.

Water resources are characterized by vast reserves. The Region is crossed by the Volga and by more than 800 small rivers, which are main fishery fund, besides they are the places for food-fish spawning, all rivers are used for navigation.
