    Veliky Ustyug

Another major tourist attraction of Vologda Region is Velikiy Ustyug. This town is known as a residence of Ded Moroz (Russian Santa Claus). According to the legend, Velikiy Ustyug it is the starting point of Ded Moroz’s New Year travel, which he undertakes every year to bring joy and presents to everyone. A range of festive events is celebrated along the year in Velikiy Ustyug. Usually these holidays are very bright and include different contests, festivals, theater performances fireworks and sightseeing tours.

Originally a governmental project (implemented under the Moscow Government and Vologda Region Administration initiative in 1998) residence of Ded Moroz has become a vivid and bright representation of Russian culture and traditions. The better place for putting this project into life can hardly be found, as Velikiy Ustyug is probably the most picturesque place of Vologda Region. It seems that white churches, bell towers and old houses of this town reflecting in the Sukhona River came from a realized dream of a child, who is reading his favorite fairy tale. Sculpture compositions of fabulous characters and buildings of the Palace, illuminated at night, help to believe in the magic world of winter miracles. Ded Moroz’s museum, workshop, and post-office are not forgotten and situated nearby. Comfortable cottages provide excellent recreation facilities for those who choose Velikiy Ustyug as their travel destination.

As for the city itself, it has many other places of interest. Velikiy Ustyug was founded in the 12th century and it is as old as Vologda or Moscow. Apart from residence of Ded Moroz, the town is also noted for outstanding architectural masterpieces of XVI – XIX centuries.

Moreover, Velikiy Ustyug has a lot to be seen for those, who are not indifferent to the crafts connected with silver. The major achievement of decorative art in Velikiy Ustyug is its silver goods (“silver hoar-frosts”) and wood carving masterpieces. Another famous production of the town is valenki – national footwear made of felt, which save from the cold even near to the residence of Ded Moroz (this name can be literally translated as “Grandfather Frost”).
