Belozersk (not the same as Belozyorsk) is a Russian town, the administrative center of the Belozersky municipal area of the Vologda Region. Belozersk stands on the bank of Beloe (White) Lake. The town’s population makes 10.1 thousand persons (as of 2009).
The main sight of the town of Belozersk is the Kremlin constructed by decree of Grand Prince Ivan III as an advanced post of Russian lands in the northeast. The Kremlin is surrounded with an earthen shaft and a huge ditch. In Belozersky Kremlin there is Spaso-Preobrazhenskiy Cathedral constructed in 1668-1670.
The oldest remaining church is the five-domed Assumption Church built by order of Ivan the Terrible in 1553-1570.
In the western part of the town, on the place of a bloody fight with Poles and Lithuanians there stands wooden Church of Prophet Elijah constructed back in 1696.
One of the most beautiful churches in the town is the five-domed Church of All-Merciful Savior decorated with izrazets (glazed tiles). It is adjoined by a steepled belltower from which a magnificent view opens on the town and the Beloe (White) Lake.
Belozersk Museum of Regional History is situated in the former Sts. Peter and Paul Church. Visitors can learn about life and traditions of Belozersk dwellers in the Museum “Russkaya Izba” (Russian Log Hut). Nature Museum will acquaint visitors with representatives of the local forest fauna, with lakes and rivers of the Belozersk District.
