Mirnyi is a Russian city, the administrative center of the Mirnyi District of Yakutia, the diamond "capital" of Russia.
It is located in the west of Yakutia, on the banks of River Irelyakh (the basin of Vilyuy), at the 1072 km distance from Yakutsk, the capital city of Yakutia Republic.
Mirnyi stands in the very north of the moderate belt of the Northern hemisphere. Its climate is sharply continental, with cold winters and short, but rather warm summers. The city belongs to the Far North zone.
The city ows its existence and name to the discovery of a kimberlite tube named Mir (i.e. Peace) in 1955.
Production of diamonds was carried out in the Mir quarry from 1957 till 2001. By 2001 the quarry was 525 meters deep and more than 1200 meters wide, having become one of the world's largest quarries, after the quarry Lucky (640 meters deep).
Mirnyi is the center of the ALROSA joint-stock company which is engaged in production of diamonds in the territory of Mirnyi, Anabar and Nurbin uluses with their subsequent sale.
