Perm-36 (Memorial Museum of History of Political Repressions)
Russia’s only museum of the history of political repressions is situated in the Perm Region.
It is located right in the premises of the former camp for political prisoners in Kuchino Village of Chusovsky District.
In the Soviet period lots of free-thinking people, among them writers, scientists and right defenders – went through the hard trial of this camp near Chusovaya River. Many prisoners died there due to severe conditions.
The labor camp Perm-36 existed for a record-breaking long period, till 1988. It was the last closed of all the Russian camps for political prisoners. By the time of its closing the camp Perm-36 had two branches: a special regime colony and a high security zone.
The museum includes remains and reconstructed premises of the camp (aka correctional labor colony) for political prisoners, where dissidents, far-outers, active fighters for human rights, opponents of a communistic mode, advocates of national independence - politicians, public figures, writers, scientists - suffered and perished in the hardest conditions.
