In February 1952 the settlement of workers was transformed into the town of Zhigulyovsk, subordinate to Samara regional center. The town is located on the right bank of the Volga River in the northern part of the Samarskaya Luka national park.
Due to the construction of the Volga region hydroelectric power station, Zhigulyovsk was linked to Syzran railway junction and became one of the links of Samarskaya Luka belt. (Syzran – Zhigulyovsk-Chapayevsk-Oktyabrsk-Syzran).
The federal automobile highway Moscow-Samara goes through the town. Fuel and power resources and mineral and raw materials deposits fostered the development of the town's economy. Oil has been extracted in the suburbs of the town for about 50 years.
Today, Zhigulyovsk is a prospective tourist center.
