Usinsk is a Russian city, the center of the Usinsk District in the Komi Republic in the northeast of the European part of Russia.
The city is located near the right river bank of Usa, which it was named after. It stands at the distance of 61 km from the Arctic Circle, and 757 km to the northeast of the city of Syktyvkar.
Its climate is moderate and continental. The average winter temperature ranges from −20 °C, to −58 °C; and the average summer temperature is about +10 °C. Snow cover keeps for 230 days in a year, from the middle of October till June.
Nature Reserves
The Usinsk complex wildlife area (aka the Usinsk marsh nature sanctuary) is located between the rivers of Pechora, Usa, Bolshaya Synia and Vyatkin. It was established in 1984 for preservation of the unique wetlands complex of international value.
The Nebesanyur Bog is a marsh wildlife area located on the left bank of the Kolva River. It represents a transitional stage from aap to hilly bogs. With the average depth of 2 meters and the maximum depth of 4 meters it takes the area of 1700 hectares.
The Usinsk Icthyological Reserve is located on the site of River Usa between the cape Pictor and the mouth of River Ponjyu. It includes the river bed of Usa and forest protected zones on both banks. The reserve takes the area of 7,8 thousand hectares.
Natural Resources
The owes its origin to oil and associated gas, the main capital of the local subsoil, the basis of the economic development of the area. Presently more than 70 percent of oil and 60 percent of gas of the total amount of these raw materials production in the Komi Republic are extracted in Usinsk.
