    Udmurt Republic (Udmurtia)

Udmurtia is the motherland of the world famous Russian composer PI Chaikovsky, author of numerous musical plays, operas and ballets, such as 'Schelkunchik', 'Sleeping Beauty', 'Swan Lake', 'Eugene Onegin', etc. that make a significant part of cultural heritage of the country. Over 40 years Izhevsk houses annual PI Chaikovsky International Musical Festival, one of most important cultural events in Russia.

Udmurtia is also famous for its numerous archeological sites that unveil treasures of the ancient peoples that inhabited the area thousand years ago. Unique cultural traditions and history of the native population if the region – the Udmurtia culture - may be of great interest because of their ancient folkloric traditions and pagan beliefs that are still alive in the memory of Udmurts.

Izhevsk Guns Plant museum is another popular attraction of the region famous for its rich traditions in arms industry.

Ethnic composition

The Udmurts have congnate languages with Finnish and Hungarian people (renowned for Finno-Ugric). The people's name is supposed to be translated as "meadow people". Today the Udmurts make up one third of the population in the Republic (31%). Besides the Udmurts, Russians (58%), Tatars (about 7%) and some other 100 nationalities live in the Republic.
