Anna Akhmatova Museum at Fountain House (Fontanny Dom) is located in the centre of St. Petersburg, in the Southern wing of the Sheremetev palace, a masterpiece of Russian baroque architecture.
“For thirty five years I lived in one of the most splendid Petersburg palaces…and rejoiced at the perfect proportions of this building of the 18th century”, - Akhmatova recollected.
The museum was opened in 1989 marking the centenary since the poetess’ birthday, and became the first museum dedicated to those representatives of Akhmatova’s generation, who tried to preserve their inner world and personality in spite of the pressures of the totalitarian establishment.
