Bilibino is a Russian city (since 1993), the administrative center of the Bilibino District of the Chukotka Autonomous Area.
The city stands at the confluence of River Karalvey to Bolshoi Kepervey (the Kolyma pool) at the 653 km distance from Anadyr. It is 1160 km away from Magadan and 6500 km away from Moscow.
The population of Bilibino made 15558 people in 1989 and nowadays, in 2015 it totals just 5592 persons. Regarding its depopulation over the Post-Soviet period Bilibino is second to only one more town of the Chukotka Autonomous Area, namely Pevek.
In the past the city had one of the largest gold mining enterprises of the USSR — the Bilibino Mining and Processing Works, as well as Anyuisk Geological and Prospecting Expedition. Nowadays these enterprises are no more at work: they have been abandoned and plundered. Only small prospecting artels carry out mining of placer gold near Bilibino.
