Shumerlya is a Russian city, the administrative center of the Shumerlya City District in the Chuvash Republic of the Russian Federation.
The railway station of Shumerlya was built in 1916 as part of the railroad Moscow — Kazan. Till July 7, 1924 the settlement at the railway station of Shumerlya was part of the Nizhny Novgorod Province. It was turned into an urban township in 1930 and a town in 1937.
It stands 110 km away from Cheboksary, the capital of the Chuvash Republic, on the bank of River Sura. It has an advantageous geographical position.
Representatives of different nationalities, including 68 percent of Russians, 24 percent of Chuvashs, as well as Mordovians, Tatars, and Ukrainians live in Shumerlya. In 2009 its population made 33,7 thousand people.
