Volzhsky is a town in the Volgograd Region of Russia, one of the largest industrial cities of the Lower Volga region, the second-large in the region.
The town’s population makes 314.4 thousand people (as of 2010). It is a part of the Volgograd agglomeration with the combined value of 1.3-1.4 million persons.
It stands on the left bank of River Akhtuba, 20 kilometers to the north east of the center of Volgograd.
The territory of Volzhsky town was occupied in the 14th century already: at that time it was the land of settlements of the Golden Horde.
Development of Volzhsky was inseparably linked with building of the Volga hydroelectric plant, which prompted building of the town.
Volzhsky has a number of interesting sights and monuments, most of them dedicated to founders of the town. The museum of local lore tells in detail about the history of town foundation and the old school (nowadays art gallery) houses art works by local artists and sculptors.
