No Floating Hotels In Moscow
March 29, 2014 07:41

Moscow authorities have blocked the possibility of opening hotels on the landing-stages. The corresponding decree has been recently released by the capital's municipality.

In particular, the document amends the decree On the Industry Specific Procedure of Opening Hotels in the City of Moscow, according to which the city will lose the floating hotels, projected for construction in 2017-2025, including those for the FIFA World Cup in 2018.

According to the document, amendments are done to prevent water pollution and to preserve the city's architectural appearance. The President of the Federation of Restaurateurs and Hoteliers of Russia Igor Bukharov believes that floating hotels could become a significant factor in attracting foreign tourists.

"Moskva River is a waterway of the first category, that is, foreign ships can enter here. But they have no place to land, whereas landings-stages could serve two functions: as berths and accommodation facilities," he said. According to the expert, the idea of floating hotels should not have to be refused, wherein it is necessary to organize the process of harmonization of the objects. "Of course, floating structures can muck the view of the river and city, but that does not mean they have to be banned. It is a question of management: first it is needed to set the parameters of height, length, width and architectural appearance. On old pictures can be seen that even in the 1930s along the Sofia Embankment – right across the Kremlin – on floating docks were located restaurants. Modern objects could also be stylized with 1930s, so they do not get out of the architectural ensemble of embankments built in that period," Bukharov said.

According to the expert, the lack of hotels and thereafter low level of competition tells primarily on the cost of accommodation: Moscow has very few affordable hotels and guest houses.
