One-time state winter census of rare cats has ended on February 2 on the territory of “The Land of the Leopard”. During three days the employees of the National Park have passed through 67 routes in search of traces of tigers and leopards, leaving about 700 kilometers of the way behind.

Large-scale works on the one-time census within the Russian part of the range of tigers and leopards started in the South of Primorye Territory on January 31 and lasted for three days. The start of the census in the northern regions and in the Khabarovsk Territory is scheduled for February 7. The organizers of this year's census are the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation with the support of the Russian Academy of Sciences, “Amur Tiger” ANO and WWF Russia.

The National Park “The Land of Leopard” conducted the census with the support of “Far Eastern Leopards” ANO. The census of rare cats in “The Land of the Leopard” was conducted mainly by the employees of the National Park - the inspectors and researchers. This work involved a total of 40 experts of the institution who either already had experience in carrying out of such monitoring or have been trained by the census coordinators.

“The census in the national park have been carried in time, 100% of routes have been passed in 3 days, which is about 700 kilometers” - Evgenii Stoma, the Deputy Director of the “The Land of the Leopard” FSBI for the territory protection, said. “There were no emergency situations, people worked responsibly, the technology also proved to be reliable. We found traces of tigers and leopards, as well as a lot of remains of victims of predators, they have also been taken into account.” According to the Deputy Director, simultaneously with the works on the census the inspectors of “The Land of the Leopard” also conducted raids, fixing human footprints in the protected area. However, no violations have been registered during the census period.

In turn, the researchers of “The Land of the Leopard” used the census by animals’ traces as another chance to once again check and replace the deleted photo-traps. Several new cameras have been installed in the vicinity of places of accumulation of large numbers of cats’ traces on the snow. “The traces of tigers and leopards were captured on the majority of routes” - Elena Salmanova, the Deputy Director for science and ecological education, said. “In addition, we managed to gather a lot of excrement of rare cats for genetic analysis. However, we cannot yet judge about numbers, since the results will be processed for several months, and the primary results will be available in spring”.

According to the recent censuses, the number of Amur tigers in “The Land of the Leopard” made up about 20 animal units and of the Far Eastern leopard - about 50 animal units.
