The Moscow Ecocentre “Zapovedniki” (“Reserves”) will help the “Kurilsky” State Reserve to build hiking trails on its territory and its buffer zone on the Kunashir Island (Southern Kuril Islands), according to the contract concluded between these structures, as Interfax reported.

Under the agreement the “Zapovedniki” Econcentre (the leading non-governmental organization in the field of support to reserves and national parks of Russia) sent two landscape architects - Olga Alyoshina and Aleksandr Dryazzhin – to Kunashir in early October, where they inspected hiking trails on the island during two weeks. O. Alyoshina and A. Dryazzhin have two higher architectural educations and experience of work on preparation of similar projects for protected areas and parks of the European part of Russia. After a trip to the Kuril Islands they will have to prepare projects on improvement of environmental routes “Caldera of Golovnina Volcano”, “Stolbovskaya” Ecological Trail”, “Andreevsky Waterfall”.

“Most of all we were amazed by your volcanoes, intimacy and warmth of “breath” of the earth interior, its availability for the residents of the Kuril Islands. Hot springs in the middle of the forest, flocks of birds flying over the sea, a severe ocean, stone pillars, spawning fish, intertwining vines and other amazing plants of Kuril forest. A lunar eclipse also was a surprising event, we were able to observe it in the forest lodge on the shore of the Goryachee Lake for the first time” - the press office quotes the impressions of the architects after their inspection of tourist routes on Kunashir. After the detailed development of infrastructure and completion of the project stage the “Kurilsky” Reserve plans to begin improvement of these routes, two of which are located in the buffer zone of the reserve.

“In addition to attraction of our own forces and means, we will need help of sponsors and volunteers, without them it is unlikely to raise the eco-tourism on Kunashir to a new level of development” - the press service notes. They also hope for help from regional authorities.

Kunashiri Island possibly meaning Black Islandor Grass Island in Ainu, is the southernmost island of the Kuril Islands, which are controlled by Russia, but four of which (among them Kunashiri Island) are claimed by Japan. It lies between the straits of Kunashiri Island, Catherine, Izmena, and South Kuril. Kunashiri Island is visible from the nearby Japanese island of Hokkaidō, from which it is separated by the Nemuro Strait. Kunashiri Island is formed by four volcanoes which were separate islands but have since joined together by low-lying areas with lakes andhot springs. All these volcanoes are still active. The island is made up of volcanic and crystalline rocks. The climate is humid continental with very heavy precipitation especially in the autumn and a strong seasonal lag with maximum temperatures in August and September. Cruise Season lasts from January to October. Port Location: visitors to the Kuril Islands leave from the Port of Korsakov. Kunahsir island port is located next to Yuzhno-Kurilsk, the island's main settlement.
