Chukotka - Magadan Oblast Energy Bridge

The cost of an energy bridge connecting the isolated energy system of Chukotka with Magadan Oblast has grown more than thrice - up to 138 billion roubles - over half a year. Such estimate was named on Thursday by the Head of the “RAO ES of the East” (an energy holding of Far East being a part of “RusHydro”) Sergei Tolstoguzov at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF).

The energy bridge means high-voltage lines Bilibino-Kekura-Peschanka-Omsukchan that are needed for the development of the deposits of Baimskaya ore zone in Chukotka. “RAO ES of the East” has signed an agreement with the Chukotka Autonomous Region and “Baimskaya Mining Company” LLC (included in Millhouse of Roman Abramovich) on the modernization of the energy sector in the region within the frame of the forum, as the energy holding reports.

It involves the design and construction of power transmission lines and a power centre with the capacity of 20 MW in Bilibino. The Chukotka government has taken an obligation to prepare design and estimate documentation, “RAO ES of the East” will perform design and survey works and the estimate of the cost of the energy centre. In January 2015 the Fund for the Far East Development (VEB structure), “Baimskaya Mining Company” LLC, “Base Metals” CJSC and the Chukotka government signed an agreement on the intentions on the project of the development of deposits of Baimskaya ore zone. Then the construction of an energy bridge was estimated at 38 billion roubles.

The resource potential of Baimskaya zone is estimated at 27 million tons of copper and 2000 tons of gold. It is also planned to implement another energy project in Chukotka costing 25 billion roubles at the expense of “Rosneftegaz” (see “Kommersant” as of May 5). “RusHydro” agreed on the inclusion of the construction of Bilibinskaya thermal power station in Chukotka in the investment program of “Rosneftegaz”, as the energy company reported in its draft annual report for 2014. The thermal power station should replace the Bilibinskaya Nuclear Power Station of “Rosenergoatom” with a capacity of 48 MW which is to be withdrawn from service in 2019-2020.
