In 2017 the statues of griffins on the Bank Bridge in St. Petersburg are planned to be renovated and protected against careless selfie lovers, the chairman of Committee for State Control, Use and Protection of Petersburg Monuments of History and Culture, Sergey Makarov reported at a press conference on Monday.

"We are planning the restoration of griffins and wings to protect them against the vandal in order to stop them climbing and making selfie. The griffins need restoration, as well as the bridge needs it too", - S.Makarov said. He did not disclose a secret of the method for protection of griffins from vandals, but noted that after finishing the works the gilded wings could not be possible to "pick open." "This year we are unlikely to restore the griffins, but I think they will be removed during the renovation of the bridge, and in 2017 they will be restored," - S.Makarov said.

The famous statues of griffins appeared on the Bank Bridge over the Griboyedov’s Chanal in 1826. Four sculptures of fantastical creatures are made of cast iron by the sculptor P.Sokolov. The griffins with enormous gilded wings and lanterns above the head have constant success among tourists. Griffins were installed on the bridge not  incidentally: during those years there was the Assignation Bank near this place and according to the legend the griffins were the best guardians of gold.
