Explosions rocked the town of Chapaevsk, some 40 km from the city of Samara, after an accident at a munitions depot where some 13 million ordnances are stored. Thousands left the city while the emergencies officers worked hard to put out the fire.

Car drivers had to find a way out of the mess but often found themselves clouded in a thick fog.

Russia has a poor record as far as munitions safety is concerned, with a string of similar cases taking place over the past several years in different regions of the country.
