Procedure Of Ukraine Accession To NATO Might Be Accelerated
December 26, 2014 11:49

The Permanent Representative of Russia to NATO Alexander Grushko stated that the procedure of Ukraine’s accession to the alliance might be accelerated. According to him, there are certain criteria that must be met for joining NATO. These are, in particular, the absence of internal conflicts or any territorial disputes with its neighboring countries.

“But, however, we also know that if NATO takes a political decision, the procedure can be accelerated” – Grushko noted during the videoconference with reporters. Grushko also mentioned the existence of the possibilities for hosting of foreign troops in Ukraine.

According to him, Ukraine has carried out a series of trainings with NATO after tragic events began to happen in this country. He noted that these trainings involved foreign weapons and soldiers. In addition, the diplomat called the decision of the Verkhovna Rada on the refusal from a non-aligned status a blow to Europe’s security.

“Ultimately, this step does not meet the interests of Ukraine itself, because there is no prospect of NATO being able to solve the real problems faced by Ukraine” – Grushko said. In his turn, on December 24 the Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov stated that Ukraine’s accession to NATO would lead to a complete breach of relations between Russia and the Alliance. This was his reaction to the law on the refusal from a non-aligned status of Ukraine adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on December 23.

The document provides for the return of Kiev to the policy of rapprochement with NATO. NATO-Russia relations have sharply deteriorated due to the crisis in Ukraine. In April 2014 the Alliance decided to suspend any civil and military cooperation with Moscow.
