Ukraine initiates an appeal to the Hague Tribunal after the bombardment of Mariupol.

The National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine ordered the government of the country to begin the procedure of preparation of the complaint to the Hague Tribunal to recognize the murders of Ukrainians in Donbass as crimes against humanity.

This is said in a message posted on the agency’s website. “The National Security and Defense Council commissioned the government to begin the procedure of appeal to the Hague Tribunal concerning crimes against humanity committed by the terrorists against the Ukrainian people in 2014-2015, as well as recognition of DPR and LPR (Donetsk and Luhansk self-proclaimed People's Republics) as terrorist organizations” – the agency stated.

The message of NSDC also says that the sanctions introduced by such countries as the EU members and the US will be surely applied in respect of Russia on the territory of Ukraine. The decision on the appeal to the Hague Tribunal was taken after the bombardment of Mariupol on January 24. 30 people in the city were killed by artillery fire.

The President of Ukraine Poroshenko stated that the incident was not just an act of terrorism, but “a crime against humanity within the jurisdiction of the Hague Tribunal”.

According to him, the responsibility for the human deaths in Mariupol lies on the militia men.

The representatives of DPR on their part denied any involvement in the bombardment of Mariupol and put the blame on the Ukrainian security services. At the same time the EU urged Russia to strengthen the influence on the militia men, so that the latter “stop aggressive actions and comply with their commitments”.
